I have been learning the Ontario Curriculum for all of my schooling life. I started at a public school in Markham. For high school, my parents wanted to expose me to a different kind of community. They decided to send me to a Catholic School for a different experience. Because I was not catholic, I felt like I was never really part of the community that was at that school. Throughout my years I averaged out to be an mediocre student. There were some years where I was a great honor roll students and other years I would be a high C or low B student. It usually depended on the set of teachers that I had. Some years I had a great teacher which was the years I excelled. It didn’t take much for teachers to be ‘great’ in my book. My criteria usually were that they had some compassion, empathy and enjoyed their job. As a student, I could tell when a teacher didn’t want to be there or was only there for the paycheck. It came out in their teaching when they did not have a love for their job or the students. I will always remember the name of the my worst and best teacher. The worst teacher was in her last year before her retirement and really just didn’t care about being there or teaching us much of anything. She gave us worksheets most of the day and expected quiet. The best teacher was my kindergarten teacher who I still talk to almost 20 years later. She is the most compassionate and caring individual I have ever met. She was the reason I wanted to be a teacher. I have always wanted to teach kindergarten to help students with the two hardest years of their education. Adapting to a new environment and a new schedule can be very hard for children. I would love to be the person that starts them off on the education careers.
During high school I developed my love for mathematics. I had always been good at math, but had never really loved it. During high school I had an incredible math teacher that really made me love math. He threw the worksheets out the window, and really wanted us to succeed. He would let us complete tests multiple times in case it took us a while longer to understand the topic. If we didn’t feel like class that day we could take a break and go for a walk. At the beginning, students would take advantage of that rule, by the end of the year, there were still one of two students that would take advantage of him, but most would only do it if they need them. From high school, I went to York to study mathematics. I got my BA in mathematics in 2014 and decided to go to the Lakehead Faculty of Education. The reason I chose Lakehead was because of their math competency test requirement for graduation. I think that it is an important aspect of being a well-rounded elementary teacher.
